Denver weekend cold snaps 118-year-old record
Denver experienced its coldest Valentine’s Day since weather records were kept in Denver starting in 1872, according to the National Weather Service.
Just before midnight Sunday, the mercury dropped to -14 degrees, eclipsing the previous record cold of -10 degree set in 1903.
“That arctic blast moved down from the north arctic circle, the north pole, late last week,” said David Barjenbruch, meteorologist with the NWS in Boulder. “It just oozed on down and since Friday every day got colder and colder until we hit the absolute low mark of -16 early this morning.”
The last time it got that cold was Feb. 6, 2014, when it was also -16. The day before that in 2014, it hit -19. The lowest temperature ever recorded in Denver was -20 in 1881.
The normal range for Feb. 14 is a high of 46 degrees, with a low of 18 degrees. Sunday also marked Denver’s lowest high temperature, at 1 degree, out-freezing the previous low high temperature of 8 degrees set in 1895.
Men and transgender individuals who are experiencing homelessness can access an emergency facility at the Lawrence Street Community center at 2222 Lawrence St., where buses will transport individuals to the expansion shelter at La Alma Recreation Center.
This expansion shelter will operate through Tuesday morning and each individual will be provided a meal every morning.
An additional overflow shelter at 1370 Elati St. has been expanded for women and transgender individuals as well.
On Monday, Denver and areas south warmed more than Greeley and Fort Collins up north.
“It’s pushing 30 degrees far south, Palmer Divide, but it’s still pretty cold north of Denver,” Barjenbruch said about noon Monday. “It’s only 12 degrees at DIA, 1 degree in Greeley and 3 to 6 degrees in Fort Collins.”
The NWS is reporting a 20% chance of snow after 11 a.m. Tuesday with a high near 36 degrees. Wednesday the chance of light snow increases to 50 percent in the afternoon and evening.
Warmer temps are expected to come Friday, creeping into the upper 40 degree range.
“We might even see 50+ degrees this weekend, to help some of the misery we’ve been going through,” said Barjenbruch. “We’ve got no big snow storms on the horizon.”
