The Denver City Council elected District 4 Councilmember Diana Romero Campbell as its new president for the 2026-2027 term.

She assumed office Monday after a unanimous vote. Council at-large member Serena Gonzales-Gutierrez was elected president pro tempore.

“I’m honored to be the sixth councilperson and the first Latina to represent Southeast Denver,” Romero Campbell said. “To be part of such a small group of leaders who have served District 4 is so meaningful, and I’m especially proud to follow a long line of strong Latina leaders representing this council as council president.” 

In her new role, Romero Campbell will preside over meetings, ensure orderly proceedings, manage the legislative agenda, refer matters to appropriate committees and represent the City Council before other governmental bodies and the public. 

She will also have broad discretion to waive certain procedural rules to ensure the City Council operates efficiently. 

Romero Campbell, in a press statement issued after her election, added that “serving the residents of Denver is the greatest privilege of my career and I look forward to working with my fellow council members, the mayor and our community to build a city where every neighborhood thrives and all Denverites feel a sense of belonging.

“I am so thankful for my colleagues’ trust and am excited to step into this role on the Denver City Council. Together we can ensure our Council is rooted in delivering results, working on bold policy to build a city that works for everybody and uniting in our efforts to create a Denver that belongs to all of us.”

As president pro tem, Serena Gonzales-Gutierrez presides and exercises the president’s full powers and authority in the event the president is absent, unable to fulfill her duties or asks her to do so.

Romero Campbell replaces Councilmember Amanda P. Sandoval of District 1 as president. Sandoval served two one-year terms.
