Ex-Jeffco Public Schools security guard arrested, accused of child sexual abuse
A former security guard for Jeffco Public Schools was arrested Monday over charges of child sexual abuse.
Brian C. Richie, 67, was arrested by Longmont police and booked into the Boulder County jail.
He faces several charges, including sexual assault of a child by a person in a position of trust, 12 counts of sexual exploitation of a child by possessing videos, 16 counts of sexual exploitation of a child by possessing photos, invasion of privacy for sexual gratification of a person under 15 and invasion of privacy for sexual gratification, according to the jail log and Richie’s arrest affidavit.
Richie’s LinkedIn and Facebook pages showed he was employed by Jeffco as a “patrol sergeant” from April 2015 to February 2026, when he retired, though the affidavit referred to him as an armed security guard who was not a certified peace officer. It is unclear what schools Richie worked at.
In a statement, Jeffco Public Schools said the district is aware of Richie’s arrest. The district said Richie had not been employed full-time since March 2024. He was rehired as an “external consultant” in September 2025 and was terminated in March when Jeffco learned he was under investigation, the ditrict said.
Jeffco said Richie began working for the district in 2006 as a bus driver, a role he worked in until February 2015. He also worked in “facilities maintenance” from 2007 to 2012, according to the district. Additionally, he worked in “patrol operations” from April 2015 until March 2024.
The current allegations against Richie are not connected to a Jeffco student and are not alleged to have happened at a Jeffco campus, according to the district.
The alleged victim reported the abuse in January to a member of Blue Sky Bridge, a Boulder-based child abuse intervention and nonprofit group after the organization conducted a presentation at the girl’s school in Longmont. The organization then reported the statements to the police, according to an arrest affidavit.
The girl, whose age was not disclosed in the affidavit, told police that Richie touched her inappropriately whenever he was alone with her, the affidavit said. The girl’s parents told the police Richie watched the girl when they were busy, which was about once a week.
The girl also said Richie had naked photos and videos of her on his phone. Other people interviewed by police said they had noticed a pattern of odd behavior by Richie toward the girl, which included cuddling while watching TV, buying the girl whatever she asked for and spending too much time alone with her, according to the affidavit.
Investigators obtained a search warrant in early February for Richie’s cellphone and went to his residence to seize it. While there, police interviewed Richie, who initially denied touching the girl or taking photos and videos of her.
After the police told him they had a warrant to seize and search his cellphone, Richie then told authorities he had pictures and videos of the girl from the age of 3 up as part of a “private collection” of “intimate” photos, the affidavit said.
The girl was unaware Richie had taken many of the photos of her, he told police, and claimed the photos were not sexual but were to document the girl “growing up.” He also told police he was “fascinated” by the girl, the affidavit said.
Richie also disclosed to police that he had a camera set up in his bedroom and recorded his wife naked without her knowledge.
After executing the search warrant on Richie’s phone, police found numerous photos and videos that contained child sexual abuse material, with the dates ranging from September 2018 to December 2025. A video obtained from Richie’s Meta glasses also allegedly showed him viewing the child sexual abuse material on his phone, the affidavit said.
In a court hearing on Monday, Richie’s bond was set at $250,000. If he posted bond, he would be required not to contact the alleged victim and barred from contacting any person under the age of 18. He also must remain in Colorado, surrender his passport and weapons and will be barred from accessing the internet or possessing devices capable of accessing the internet.
After the bond conditions were announced, Richie appeared to fall to the ground and had to be helped up by several Boulder County deputies.
Richie’s case added to a list of child sexual assault cases involving former Jeffco Public Schools employees between the end of 2023 and March 2026, including an investigation into David Weiss, the school district’s former chief of schools, that involved possession of child sexual assault material in December 2024.
A Creighton Middle School employee, 30-year-old Luis Robles-Luevanos, was arrested and charged with two counts of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust and one count of criminal attempt to commit sexual assault in February 2024.
Robles-Luevanos was found not guilty following a Jefferson County trial.
Former Green Mountain High School psychologist James Chevrier was found guilty of five counts in January, including child sexual assault, and was sentenced last week to five years in prison.
