Boulder Spirits new retail, tasting space on Pearl Street is cozy and inviting
Grand opening from a Scotsman making American whiskey ready for 'Small Business Saturday.'
Tucked under the Citizens National Bank Building on the ever-so quirky and vibrant Pearl Street Mall in Boulder is a place to buy whiskey from Boulder Spirits.
The cozy, modern and sleekly decorated tasting room and shop is not a liquor store, however, it is a space where one can grab a bottle of award winning craft spirits aside from traveling to the where the alcohol is created at the Vapor Distillery in east Boulder.
The grand opening is Nov. 30.
“Whether you go for a hike or have a lovely meal, finish with a little flight of whiskey, we wanna be a part of that as much as possible,” Weldon Briggs, hospitality and education director at Boulder Spirits, said while speaking about the new store front to The Denver Gazette.

“Pearl (Street Mall) sees 7,100,000 tourists and visitors every year, and we wanted a big voice in all of those people who walk through and try to attract as many people as we can, introducing them to the products and things that we’re doing differently in the whiskey world.”
Boulder Spirits wanted to ensure that the best customer satisfaction with a retail store front for enjoying their spirits was a waiting game, Briggs said, but worth waiting around for for the right spot on Pearl Street to become available.

“A lot of the spaces that you see on Pearl tend to be these 2,000, 1,000, 3,000 square foot ‘metropolises’ almost, which is fine, but as far as (having) a nice feel (to them), as a comfortable tasting room is concerned, we wanted something smaller,” he said. “It took a few years for the perfect place to open, and that perfect place came up and we pulled the trigger.”
Boulder Spirits began its quest by distilling only gin in 2007.
By 2010, Scottish-American distiller Alastair Brogan had brought over a 1,000 gallon Scotch copper pot still from Scotland, became owner at Vapor Distillery and the company’s American Whiskey via a Scot was born.
“I met Alastair a good handful of years ago, fell in love with him, the process, who he is behind the scenes, and to the whiskeys that are coming out,” Briggs said. “He is one of the pieces that’s making our whiskeys different than the next distillery down the road.”
Alastair’s pot still is the largest in the state of Colorado.
“If you’re working with single malt whiskies, so something that’s 100% barley, it really needs this process that a pot still is able to provide,” Briggs said. “We have the Scottish still that we use to make American whiskey, and it ends up making a unique and incredible product.”

The flagship spirit offered from Boulder Spirits is their American Single Malt Whiskey, retailing for $55.
Some of the other single malt whiskeys are distilled between 3.5-4 years in No. 3 char, virgin white oak barrels, ranging in price from $55 to $85.
Another spirit the distillery is proud of is its 7-year cask strength bourbon, a newer release.

Boulder Spirits has been busy working with Downtown Boulder Partnerships and Visit Boulder to ensure customers truly can enjoy the new retail space.
“Downtown Boulder Partnerships helped us with some of the promos, really (helping us) nail down the niches and the nuances with the store,” Briggs said and with Visit Boulder “helping us create and become one of those top five things that you gotta do when come to Boulder.”

Timing the grand opening with “Small Business Saturday” coming up on Nov. 30 was all part of the plan. It will have special offers happening at the store front.
“The first 50 people that come in get an etched Glencairn glass, and we’re offering 15% off of $100 purchases or more that day, too,” Briggs said.

Other spirits like vodka, gin and bitters for cocktail mixing are offered at the retail store.
The retail store is currently open during their ‘soft opening’ Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Boulder Spirits’ retail store location is at 1428 Pearl Street, Boulder, Colorado. Learn more about Boulder Spirits one their website here.
