Greeley police say an officer was involved in fatal shooting Tuesday, an investigation is now open
An investigation is underway after a wanted man was fatally shot by Greeley police Tuesday afternoon after a chase that ended in Evans.
Officials from the Greeley Police Department wrote in a social media post that the department has called upon the 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team to investigate the shooting that took place near 23rd Avenue and 32nd Street.
Greeley police officers spotted a wanted man leaving a house in Greeley at 2:34 p.m. and watched him enter a car and drive away, according to a media release from the Weld County Sheriff’s Office.
Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over at the intersection of Reservoir Road and 23rd Avenue in southern Greeley, but the man led law enforcement on a brief pursuit.
During the pursuit, the man was involved in an accident near 23rd Avenue and 32nd Street, and he ran to a Loaf ‘N Jug in the 3200 block of 23rd Avenue in Evans.
At the Loaf ‘N Jug, officers said the man, while armed with a handgun, attempted to carjack a vehicle but was unsuccessful.
Pursuing officers commanded the man to surrender, but he refused, and an officer fired a weapon.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene and information about his identity is not being released at this time.
Officials say the man was also involved in a carjacking earlier in the day on Interstate 25 in Mead.
