Kellner names leadership team; Brauchler to oversee STEM School shooting suspect’s trial

John Kellner, the district attorney-elect of Colorado’s largest judicial district, announced his leadership team Thursday. Kellner will be sworn in as the 18th District’s DA on Jan. 12.

The district covers Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties.

According to a news release, Kellner has chosen Tom Byrnes, who currently works in the office, as his assistant district attorney.

He has chosen more than 16-year veteran prosecutor Vicki Klingensmith as the senior chief deputy DA for the district’s Arapahoe office.

Chris Wilcox will have the same role in the Douglas County office, the release states.

Eva Wilson will lead the Elbert County office.

According to the release, she is currently a prosecutor in the First Judicial District and previously worked in the 18th District for 20 years.

According to the release, current DA George Brauchler, who is term-limited, will remain the chief prosecutor for the 2019 STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting.

He will continue in that role as a chief deputy district attorney. The trial is scheduled to start Feb. 1.

“I firmly believe that the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office is one of the best DA offices in the state, but I intend to aim even higher. To that end, I’ve selected some outstanding leaders for senior positions,” Kellner said in the release.

“I know we can do more to support victims, tackle rising violent crimes in our communities, support rehabilitation for defendants, and improve transparency and accountability to create a more equitable criminal justice system.”

Kellner, a Republican, won election in the fall over Democratic candidate Amy Padden by just more than 1,400 votes, which triggered a recount. He has served as a chief deputy DA under Brauchler.

The 18th District contains well over 1 million people. Some of the state’s most notorious violent crimes have taken place in the jurisdiction, including the Aurora theater massacre and Chuck E. Cheese killings.
