3 students hospitalized after allegedly vaping marijuana at Colorado middle school
The incident happened at Sabin Middle School after eight students complained of a high heart rate
Three students were taken to the hospital from a Colorado Springs middle school Thursday morning after allegedly vaping highly-concentrated marijuana, according to District 11 spokesperson Devra Ashby.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department, Police Department and personnel from American Medical Response were at Sabin Middle School after complaints from eight students of a high heart rate after vaping a marijuana product, Ashby said.
The fire and police departments confirmed their involvement just before noon.
Three of the eight students were taken to a nearby hospital, while the remaining five were treated at the school, according to Ashby.
Late in the morning, district officials were in the process of contacting the parents of the students. Ashby said responding to the students’ needs was the school’s first priority.
It’s unknown if the substance was vaped before or after classes had begun Thursday.
D-11 has a zero-tolerance policy on nicotine and vape use and products. Disciplinary measures can include exclusion from extracurricular activities among other things and repeated violations may result in suspension from school. In accordance with state law, no student shall be expelled solely for tobacco use, according to D-11 documentation.
