Denver to begin recycling programs for Christmas trees, holiday lights

Beginning next week, Denver residents will be able to recycle used Christmas trees and holiday lights for free through the city’s seasonal recycling programs.

From Monday to Jan 15, customers of Denver Solid Waste Management can recycle trees by placing them out for pickup on scheduled trash collection days before 7 a.m.

Trees should not be in bags or boxes, must be cleared of all decorations and must be at least 2 feet away from trash, compost and recycling containers. Artificial trees and flocked trees will not be accepted.

Trees collected by Denver Solid Waste Management will be turned into mulch that will be given to Denver residents for free at the spring Mulch Giveaway and Compost Sale.

For residents not apart of Denver Solid Waste Management, drop-off tree recycling is available through Jan 30 at the Cherry Creek Recycling Drop-Off and the Havana Nursery.

Residents can also recycle broken or burnt-out holiday lights through Jan. 19 at the Cherry Creek Recycling Drop-Off and Blue Star Recyclers.

Extra trash service will be delayed for two weeks during the tree recycling program.

More information on Denver’s seasonal recycling programs is available at denvergov.org/denverrecycles.
