Daily visits to six of Colorado’s state parks will be a little more expensive starting Friday as a $1 high-use fee will go into effect.

Lake Pueblo, Golden Gate Canyon, Staunton, Castlewood Canyon, Roxborough and Highlane state parks will implement the fee on daily vehicle passes.

The Colorado Parks and Wildlife said the additional fee is essential to mitigate expenses and resource strain associated by high visitor rates at the six parks.

Previously, Cherry Creek, Chatfield, Boyd Lake and Eldorado Canyon imposed the high-use fees.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic reducing the amount of travel and limiting indoor activities, the six state parks adding the fee have seen a “huge increase” in visitation since March, officials said.

Officials said parking spots at Eldorado Canyon were at full vehicle capacity all summer.

Because of the high visitation numbers, many of these parks now require maintenance funds as CPW has relied heavily on volunteers throughout the year for trash pickup, extra patrolling and for programs such as the Trail Ambassadors at Cheyenne Mountain State Park.

The additional revenue gained by the funds will assist in trash pickup, increased resource damage, additional temporary staff and additional wear-and-tear maintenance at facilities.
