Denver Girl Scouts dance, sing, make bracelets to celebrate Taylor Swift’s birthday

Girls Scouts from around Colorado gathered in Denver Tuesday night to celebrate girlhood and pop icon Taylor Swift’s birthday with dancing, friendship bracelets, karaoke and trivia.

Swift — who has become a symbol of female empowerment for many girls, including those who attended the Girl Scout event —  turned 34 Wednesday.

About 100 Girl Scouts, moms and community members danced the night away, sang karaoke, made and traded friendship bracelets and celebrated the birthday of Girl Scout alum and music powerhouse Swift.

“This party is a way to celebrate a music icon who is an exceptional business woman, a great example of girl power and who happens to be a Girl Scout alum,” Girl Scouts of Colorado CEO Leanna Clark said.

In July, Swift brought “The Eras Tour” to Denver’s Mile High Stadium, performing a three-hour set that included music from across her 10-studio album career.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to say to you … Denver, Colorado, welcome to the Eras Tour,” Taylor Swift said then to a sold-out crowd of about 70,000 fans at Empower Field.

Five months later, Denver Swifties are still reveling in the magic she brought to the city for two nights.

Catherine Schofield, the event’s organizer, said Girl Scouts and Taylor Swift have more in common than young Swift’s time in the organization.

Swift has an “aura” around her that brings people together, Schofield said. Girl Scouts, in similar fashion, is all about finding new friends and making connections.

Girl Scouts also inspires girls to be strong leaders, like Swift does, she said.

“It’s so cool for young girls to be able to see these powerful women who are getting prestigious awards,” Schofield said. “She just won Time’s Person of the Year, you know, and she’s my sister because she’s a Girl Scout. Having people like her for girls to see as role models is so awesome.”

In addition to putting the event together, Schofield led the girls through karaoke to songs like “Bad Blood” and “Shake it Off” and through Swift-related trivia that challenged even the most dedicated fans.

Schofield asked the girls Swift’s middle name, Alison, the first song she won a Grammy for, “White Horse,” and other trivia questions that had the group of young fans whispering to their moms about how to spell “Reputation.”

Albany Luna, who’s been a Swift fan since her country era, and her 11-year-old daughter Lilly Luna said they’re inspired by Swift’s kindness and the way she inspires girls to chase their dreams and be themselves.

The mother-daughter duo recently watched Swift’s documentary together and were moved by Swift’s message that she wants everyone to be happy and not be afraid to be themselves, Luna said.

“Especially with preteen and teenage girls, they really struggle with all that comes with self identity,” Luna said. “I think (my daughter) getting into Taylor Swift now really is like empowering her to be her own person.”

When Lilly Luna deals with bullies and other hardships that come along with being a girl her age, she listens to “Shake if Off” as a reminder not to let other peoples’ opinions get to her.

When asked what her birthday message to Swift would be, Lilly Luna, wearing a sparkly blue sequin jacket, said: “That she’s awesome! And happy birthday.”
