This Denver library about to be renamed

When the Ross-Barnum Branch Library, located at 3570 W 1st Ave., reopens after renovations, it will be known as the Ross-Phyllis Bigpond Branch Library, according to a statement from the Denver Public Library Commission. It’s been closed since August.

The Commission approved the name change on Wednesday after community feedback.

“Renaming this library is more than a tribute — it’s a celebration of Phyllis Bigpond’s enduring impact on our community,” said Denver Councilwoman and Community Renaming Committee member Jamie Torres. “Her lifelong commitment to service and community has shaped generations, and this library will continue that legacy by inspiring future leaders and changemakers.”

The new name recognizes Bigpond, who was the founder and executive director of the Denver Indian Family Resource Center. The agency is dedicated to meeting the needs of American Indian and Alaska Native families and children. She was known for four decades of community service and advocacy, according to a Denver Public Library news release.

Community efforts to rename the library began in 2023 after it was discovered that 19th-century circus showman P.T. Barnum’s past did not align with the library’s mission and values.

Barnum, according to DPL, once owned a large tract of land in Denver’s Barnum neighborhood.

The Library Commission approved moving forward with the renaming in August 2023 after a majority of community members expressed support.

Names suggested for the renaming were vetted against the library’s recognition policy and committee naming criteria.

“Denver Public Library is committed to ensuring all of our locations reflect and honor our rich history and community,” said Michelle Jeske, City Librarian and Executive Director. “We are proud that one of our locations will now bear the name of Phyllis Bigpond.”

This is the second library location to undergo a community renaming process.

DPL’s Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales Branch Library, located in west Denver at Colfax Avenue and Irving Street, is named after the Chicano rights activist and poet.
