Weather Results in Trail Ridge Road Closure for Season

Rocky Mountain National Park’s Trail Ridge Road closed for the season to through travel on Friday, the National Parks Service announced.

Eleven miles of the road are above 11,500 feet high, and winter conditions including drifting snow, high winds and below-freezing temperatures occur above 10,000 feet, a news release says. The road, which has few guardrails and no shoulder, typically reopens the last week in May. This year, the road opened May 31.

During the winter, weather permitting, the road is open to Many Parks Curve on the east side of the park and to the Colorado River Trailhead on the west side of the park, the release says. Several of the park’s popular destinations – including Bear Lake Road, Moraine Park, Horseshoe Park and the section of Trail Ridge Road along the Kawuneeche Valley – remain open.

Old Fall River Road closed for the season Oct. 2, but both roads will remain open to cyclists and leashed pets until Dec. 1. Both roads will be on “winter trail status” from Dec. 1 until April 1, which means pedestrians are allowed beyond closed gates, but cyclists and pets are not.
