Breckenridge Residents Call for Giant Troll to Be Removed

Breckenridge Residents Call for Giant Troll to Be Removed

According to a recent report by the Summit Daily, residents in Breckenridge aren’t too happy about the recent viralness that’s come to their town in the form of a 15-foot-tall wooden troll. In a Breckenridge Town Council meeting on Tuesday, the removal of the troll was proposed. Given that the trailhead to this attraction is located in a neighborhood, swarms of people coming to visit this amazing art installation have caused crowding on local streets, which seems to be the main point of frustration. Granted, another resident in their report cited the creepiness of the troll as a reason for her disdain.

The troll was installed in Breckenridge as part of August’s Breckenridge International Festival of Arts and has been sitting in the same spot ever since, expected to last in its current capacity for up to two years.

Of the people we reached out to in Breckenridge, emotions seemed to be mixed. Most had a soft spot for the troll, though some did seem annoyed by the increase in local crowds caused by troll hunters. In contrast to the Summit Daily report, those we reached out to, though annoyed, seemed to think that the troll’s 15-seconds-of-fame would soon pass. They were willing to tolerate the crowds for the time being, finding it odd that such a negative reaction has been so quickly voiced against what most would assume would be positive addition to the long list of attractions in Breckenridge.

When members of our team visited the troll last weekend, they did mention that a small crowd of people was present at the site. They also mentioned that solitude didn’t seem to be the expectation among the troll hunters, as the troll is on an easy-to-access, short, and family-friendly path that’s right in town.

The troll, officially named Isak Heartstone, was built by a Danish man named Thomas Dambo over 10 days, a $40,000 commission from Breckenridge Creative Arts. It was constructed using scrap lumber and downed trees.

If you’re wanting to follow the progress on this situation, the next Breckenridge town meeting is on October 23. With how strongly some people feel about the troll, we’re guessing it’ll come up again.
