While it’s still too early to tell, this incident bears similarity with two separate incidents that occurred at Keystone at the end of last month. In those cases, skiers were found unconscious on the run, later determined to be the result of a cardiac event. Some have suggested that these cardiac events occur due to the low oxygen at a higher altitude stressing the body, specifically the heart.
This is the 7th skiing/snowboarding-related death of the season, with previous deaths including a recent avalanche-related death, 21-year-old Daniel Giger ( accident at Breckenridge), 26-year-old Bill Brockmuller ( collision at Eldora), 53-year-old Daniel Mares of Arvada ( cardiac event at Keystone Resort), 66-year-old Durwood Marshall of Silverthorne ( cardiac event at Keystone Resort), and Bindu Sky Pomeroy ( accident in Vail backcountry).
