Skier dies on popular Colorado fourteener

The Summit County Rescue Group was notified about an injured skier on Quandary Peak outside of Breckenridge at 11:20 on Sunday. This skier was found at around 13,400 feet and had to be reached via helicopter. The man was pronounced dead at the scene and was skiing with another person at the time of the accident that resulted in his death. Details about what caused the accident and subsequent death (along with who was involved) have not been released.

Quandary Peak climbs to 14,265 feet and is one of the more popular mountains to hike in the state. It’s also very popular among backcountry skiers thanks to it’s roadside location, a straightforward approach to the summit, and a variety of skiable terrain. This is the second death on Quandary Peak in less than a year, though that previous death was related to hiking.

This is the 8th skiing/snowboarding-related death of the season, with previous deaths including the death of a 71-year-old at Breckenridge, a recent  avalanche-related death, 21-year-old Daniel Giger ( accident at Breckenridge), 26-year-old Bill Brockmuller ( collision at Eldora), 53-year-old Daniel Mares of Arvada ( cardiac event at Keystone Resort), 66-year-old Durwood Marshall of Silverthorne ( cardiac event at Keystone Resort), and Bindu Sky Pomeroy ( accident in Vail backcountry).
