Thousands sign petition to “revoke the business license of Virtika” following social media post by founder

As of Wednesday morning, more than 17,000 people have signed a petition titled “Revoke the business license of Virtika, who encourages destruction of protected ecosystems,” with a goal on the petition page pushing for 25,000 total digital signatures.

The creation of the petition on Change.org was the result of an incident in which David Lesh, the founder of Virtika, climbed onto a log at the center of the fragile destination, publishing a photo of the act to his personal Instagram page. The photograph was later published on the company Instagram page. Signage at the site clearly instructs visitors to stay off of the log, with this specific rule causing controversy in the past involving other parties.

Lesh’s post immediately drew widespread controversy. Lesh has a history of violating rules meant to protect Colorado’s natural space, recently sentenced for an incident on Independence Pass that involved him snowmobiling during July in a place where motorized vehicles are always prohibited.

The petition states that it will go to Governor Jared Polis, though it is unclear whether or not a petition like this can result in any formal action.

Virtika outerwear company is currently based in Denver, Colorado.
