Mountain pass closes amid whiteout conditions in Colorado

Colorado’s high country is getting hammered by heavy snow and high winds on Tuesday afternoon, prompting several road closures and traction laws around the state.

Highway 6 over Loveland Pass is closed on Tuesday due to adverse weather conditions.

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), there is no estimated time for reopening the mountain pass between mile markers 222 and 228. Hazmat vehicles may use the Eisenhower Tunnel at top of the hour. Other traffic will be held, resulting in major delays for travelers.

Another closure remains in place on US 285 between mile markers 183 and 207 from Fairplay to Grant. This is due to winter weather conditions.

Westbound lanes of I-70 near Georgetown are also moving slowly between mile markers 228 and 215 due to multiple spun-out vehicles.

The heavy snow has resulted in the activation of chain and traction laws around the state, including CO 9 over Hoosier Pass (mile markers 73-80) and US 24 over Battle Mountain (mile markers 148-154). There’s also a seasonal traction law in effect on a large stretch of I-70 from September to May (Read more on that here).

According to the National Weather Service, some mountains have already received 2 to 5 inches of snow so far this afternoon.
