Colorado hiker missing since August found dead, dog found alive and with body

According to the Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office, the body of 71-year-old Rich Moore of Pagosa Springs has been found, along with his dog, who was found alive and with his body. Moore and his dog had been missing since August 19, disappearing after leaving with a plan to summit Blackhead Peak, which is located just east of Pagosa Springs.

A press release related to the case notes that the body of Moore was found by a local hunter in the Lower Blanco drainage basin on October 30. His white Jack Russell terrier, Finney, was with him.

On the following day, members of the sheriff’s office, along with search and rescue, were flown into the area to locate, identify, and recover Moore’s body. Finney was also recovered by the crews and was transported to a local veterinary hospital for examination and treatment. She has since been reunited with her family.

Officials have not released a cause-of-death in the case, but did note that foul play is not suspected.

Blackhead Peak rises to 12,500 feet of elevation. A trail report on Summit Post indicates that the standard summit-bound route is about three miles one-way. The Rio Blanco is located in a valley southeast of the mountain’s summit, with the standard summit-bound route up the mountain starting on the northwest side of the peak.

Condolences go out to those impacted by Moore’s death.
