Two ‘risks of heavy snow’ expected in Colorado to start new year

According to the National Weather Service, winter storms may bring two chances of heavy snow to Colorado in early January.

The first risk of heavy snow will come from January 4 to January 5, encompassing south-central and southwest Colorado.

The second risk of heavy snow comes January 7 to January 9, spanning northwest Colorado, including Steamboat Springs. This second storm system is quite large, spanning parts of Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana.

Both of these storms are still days away and a lot can change between now and then. It’s also worth noting that this report comes from an ‘experimental’ risk of heavy snowfall map that’s produced by the National Weather Service. While this report is experimental, it tends to hold true in some capacity. Longer range outlooks do sometimes see a timeline shift, geographical shift, or a change in expected intensity.
