10 of the best ‘tree skiing’ runs found around Colorado

If you’re ready to venture off of the groomed runs and into a whole other realm of untouched powder, tree runs are the perfect choice – provided you’ve got the skills and experience for the challenge. Indulge your adventurous side and carve your way through this list of Colorado’s finest tree runs.

1. Steep and Deep (Vail)

This run lives up to its name, as it is indeed steep and deep (when there’s powder). Located all the way back in Vail’s Blue Sky Basin, the run starts with tight trees and a steep slope, before mellowing out into luge-like trails towards the bottom. You’ll also encounter bumps at the very end of the run.

2. Topher’s Trees, Mary Jane (Winter Park)

Nestled between Trestle and Roundhouse, this is a double black run with tight trees. The run is accessed from Trestle, on the right just before the first steep hill.

3. The Alley’s (Arapahoe Basin)

The Alley’s are only for experts, as they are extraordinarily steep and technical, and only get more difficult as you make your way down the mountain. Located to the skier’s left of Pallavicini, the Alley’s include David’s Run, Second Alley, Third Alley, and West Alley.

4. Christmas Tree Bowl (Steamboat)

Steamboat is renowned for its tree skiing, and was Peak Rankings’ top choice for best tree skiing resorts in North America. Glancing at the resort’s winter trail map, you can easily see all the opportunities for tree runs. Christmas Tree Bowl is a local’s favorite when it comes to finding great tree skiing, and the steepness and technicality varies. All the runs lead into the blue run, Big Meadow.

5. Over the Rainbow trees (Loveland)

Just off Chet’s Dream lift, you’ll find some great tree skiing off the sides of Over the Rainbow. Just be sure to stay out of backcountry territory.

6. Morningside Park (Steamboat)

Steamboat’s Morningside Park is perfect for intermediate skiers looking to improve their tree skiing. It’s located on the backside of Mt. Werner, and is a great area for forgiving tree skiing. There are plenty of groomed runs flanked by intermediate-friendly glades for when you’re ready to dip into the trees.

7. 4 Get About It (Beaver Creek)

Beaver Creek was second only to Steamboat on Peak Ranking’s list of the best tree skiing resorts in North America. And the best part is that Beaver Creek offers great tree skiing for all skills levels. Located near the bottom of the mountain, 4 Get About It features tight trees and is steep. However, the run does open up at some points to include luge-like sections with small jumps.

8. Jack Rabbit Alley (Beaver Creek)

This one is for the kids, but it’s still a blast and will foster a love for tree runs in anyone who is just starting to master the art of skiing. The run is one of Beaver Creek’s Kids Adventure Zones. Skiers will pass through tipis and over wagons to make it to the bottom of the run. There are also plenty of opportunities to escape the trees and ski the groomer that runs next to Jack Rabbit Alley.

9. Black Bear Glade & Free Fall Glade (Copper)

These are two more double black diamond runs, located near the base of Copper. The trees aren’t as tight, but the runs still include a steep, consistent open glade.

10. Buckskin Glade (Vail)

This is another run for kids, but it’s still a blast. You can make the run as challenging as you want. If you stay near the edge of the trees, near the groomer, you’ll be treated to nice, easy turns around the trees. The run gets slightly more challenging the deeper you dare to venture into the trees, but you can always make your way back onto the groomer.

Editor’s Note: Tree skiing is very dangerous and presents obvious hazards. Entering the trees at a resort can be deadly, even for experts. Proceed with extreme caution.
