“Steer clear of downtown”: Rain and hail hits Colorado city hard, closing key roads
In case you missed it, parts of northern Colorado got hit with heavy rain and hail on Tuesday into Wednesday morning night, with some parts of the region experiencing flooding that’s still having an impact.
The City of Greeley was one spot where the weather hit particularly hard, with the city starting to notify the public about safety issues related to flooding around midnight.
According to CBS News, hail reached two inches in diameter – about the size of an egg – in some parts of the local area, with some places getting hit with up to 2 inches of rapidly falling rain.
“If you see flood waters, turn around, don’t drown,” wrote the city. A lot of drowning deaths that occur during flooding situations end up taking place when people attempt to drive through flooded areas in their vehicles.
“Steer clear of downtown,” wrote the City of Greeley in a Wednesday morning social media post. Numerous closures remained in place as of 7 a.m. on Wednesday morning, including parts of 16 Street and 6th Avenue. The Active Adult Center on 6th Street is set to remain closed throughout the entire day.
A temporary shelter has been set up for impacted families at the Greeley Family FunPlex.
