Aurora police confirm four suspects arrested are linked to Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua

The Aurora Police Department confirmed on Tuesday that all four suspects arrested in connection with a shooting in late July are linked to the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua.

Among those arrested are two Venezuelan brothers, Jhonnarty DeJesus Pacheco-Chirinos, 24, and Jhonardy Jose Pacheco-Chirinos, 22.

In addition to the Pacheco-Chirinos brothers, two other suspects — Dixon Azuaje-Perez, 20, and Nixon Azuaje-Perez, 19 — were arrested for allegedly tampering with evidence related to the shooting at an apartment complex that the city shut down a few weeks ago.

All four suspects have ties to Tren de Aragua, according to the police.

Specifically, Jhonnarty DeJesus Pacheco-Chirinos is, like his younger brother, a “documented member” of the gang, the police said.

The police also confirmed that Jhonardy Jose Pacheco-Chirinos is, indeed, known as “Cookie” or “Galleta.” The Aurora police earlier said authorities are “not aware of his status within the gang,” likely a reference to reports that he is the ringleader or “shot caller” of the Venezuelan gang in the region.

The police said they confirmed the brothers’ gang ties after working with local, state and federal partners.

The police added that Dixon and Nixon are “suspected to be members of TdA.”

When police arrived at The Aspen Grove apartments the morning of July 28 on reports of a shootout, one of the first things they noticed as they were clearing the scene were two men who were “picking up fired casings along the walkways of the third floor.”

The two men, Nixon and Dixon Azuaje-Perez, court records reported, disappeared into a third floor unit and would not come to the door when police knocked. Later, they told police through a translator and that they stayed inside but that their neighbors were armed. They denied that they had anything to do with them, and told police they were moving the bullet casings so that police wouldn’t link them.

The brothers were arrested later that afternoon, but police noted in the arrest affidavit that because they threw the shell casings into some rocks below, their actions had impeded the ballistics investigation.

Later, the arrest document said, “Nixon was easily identified via video by his unique hair, which he pulled out while at the jail.”

Jhonnarty was arrested on July 29 on charges of attempted murder and assault after an early morning shootout on July 28 at the Aspen Grove apartments, as previously reported by the Denver Gazette.

Police affidavits said the brothers, along with several other men, terrorized residents with automatic weapons during a drunken confrontation, leaving one man shot in the arm and another bleeding from a stomach wound.

Witnesses told police the brothers had previously bragged about “owning” the Aspen Grove complex and funding their gang through thefts at local Walmart stores, according to documents.

The documents described a violent scene on July 28.

At 4:32 a.m. on July 28, Aurora police were called to the property on reports of shots fired and a possible stabbing. When they arrived, vehicles were careening out of the parking lot and two men were throwing spent shell casings from the balconies, according to the affidavits.

By the time the incident was under police control, a man had jumped out of a fourth story window trying to escape, one man was shot in the arm, and another was found across the street bleeding from his stomach, according to an arrest document.

The Aspen Grove complex, now boarded up and deemed uninhabitable by the city due to code violations, is one of several apartment complexes owned by CBZ management.

Letters obtained by The Denver Gazette from the law firm representing CBZ Management show officials were fully aware weeks ago of accusations that a Venezuelan gang had “forcibly taken control” of the property.

“Any presence of criminal activity, including gang activity, will not be tolerated,” the Aurora Police Department said in a statement on X. “The Aurora Police Department will continue to fight crime; we will find and arrest those responsible.”
