Colorado spot dubbed one of ‘most expensive’ small towns in country for home buyers

A Colorado mountain town was recently dubbed the 3rd-most expensive place to buy a home in the country – and it wasn’t Vail, Aspen, or Telluride.

LendingTree recently dove into the topic of how some small towns around the country can have housing prices similar to those found in major metro areas, seeking to determine which towns of 50,000 or less around the country were most expensive while also looking at home values compared to local income.

Breckenridge, Colorado ended up ranking 3rd, behind 1st-place Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts and 2nd-place Jackson, Wyoming.

According to LendingTree, the median home value in Breckenridge is $760,000 compared to a median household income of $100,611. This makes home prices in Breckenridge roughly comparable to that of Los Angeles, which has a slightly higher median home value ($772,000) and a slightly lower median household income ($89,105).

Steamboat Springs wasn’t far behind Breckenridge, either, ranking 4th overall with a median home value of $691,800 and a median household income of $95,144 – with a home value-to-income ratio comparable to that of San Diego.

It’s no surprise that several Colorado spots are found on the full list. After all, many locals would probably say they’re happy to pay a little more to be so close to so much mountainous terrain.
