It’s no secret that numerous nuclear missile silos exist in Colorado – and while this advice might seem obvious, don’t go looking for them.

According to a press release from Colorado’s Sable Altura Fire Rescue, their team assisted Bennett-Watkins Fire Rescue and South Metro Fire Rescue to save a young male who had fallen about 40 to 50 feet into a decommissioned Titan Missile Facility on private property near Watkins on Wednesday.

The male had fallen into what is believed to be an exhaust vent tunnel of the facility, with the Sable Altura crews involved in building a rope system to get to the rescue subject in the tunnel. Two members of the rescue agency then descended into the tunnel to assess the male before attaching a harness to him and bringing him back to the surface.

Additional reporting from 9News indicates that the rescue subject was a teen, one of two who were with an adult at the top of the silo when the fall took place. 9News also reports that the teen landed in water in the tunnel, but not water that was so deep that it went over his head. He was hospitalized as a result of his injuries, though his injuries were described to be non-life-threatening.

Numerous nuclear missile silos exist around Colorado, mostly concentrated in the Eastern Plains region. Some of these silos have since been decommissioned, with roots dating back to the Cold War.

The public has long been instructed not to enter these silos, though related cases of trespassing and attempts to gain entry still take place. One highly-publicized rescue mission related to a missile silo in Colorado took place last May, with a Sable Altura Fire Department firefighter then using the phrase “literally death around every corner down there” to describe how dangerous entering these silos can be.
