Denver jury convicts man who shot, killed 63-year-old breaking up a fight in park

Trahavonie Smith faces up to 48 years in prison for shooting, killing Gary Arellano in April 2022.

A Denver jury on Monday convicted a man, who, nearly three years ago, shot and killed a 63-year-old man who was breaking up a fight in La-Alma-Lincoln Park.

The jury convicted Trahavonie Smith of second-degree murder and unlawful possession of a large capacity magazine. He faces up to 48 years in prison, according to a Denver District Attorney’s Office news release.

On April 27, 2022, Smith shot and killed Garry Arellano, 63, while he stepped in to break up a fight between two teenage girls at La-Alma-Lincoln Park in Denver.

One of the girl’s involved in the fight was Smith’s girlfriend, according to authorities.

Smith’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 11.

“Garry Arellano’s death was a senseless tragedy; he was murdered while doing the right thing – trying to stop a fight between two girls,” Denver District Attorney John Walsh said in a statement.

“Today’s verdict,” he added, “ensures that Trahavonie Smith will be held accountable for his needless decision to shoot and kill Garry. We hope that all those who knew and loved Garry now have a measure of comfort that justice has been served.”
