Less than ‘1 person per square mile’ lives in Colorado’s ‘least-crowded’ county

Looking to live a life without much interruption in Colorado? Three of the state’s counties have a population density of less than one resident per square mile – two of which are also home to some of the best (and most overlooked) outdoor recreation in the state.

In terms of population density, three counties are home to fewer than a single resident per square mile – Kiowa with 0.8 people per square mile, Jackson with 0.85 people per square mile, and Hinsdale with 0.7 people per square mile.

Kiowa County is located along the state’s easternmost border, mostly known for its agriculture. In terms of outdoor recreation and other tourism opportunities, there’s not much to do here – though it is home to the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site and a portion of the TransAmerica Trail Bicycle Route.

Meanwhile, there’s a bit more to do in Jackson County, which is bordered by multiple mountain ranges, home to the town of Walden, and is close to Routt County’s Steamboat Springs. While ranching is a top industry in this area, the county is also home to State Forest State Park, multiple national forests, a wildlife refuge, the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, and the aforementioned TransAmerica Trail Bicycle Route. While most of the outdoor recreation destinations in this area aren’t visited by most of the state’s outdoor recreation tourists, that’s part of the charm.

That said, those really looking to escape into nature may want to set their sights on Hinsdale County – which spans 1,123 square miles in southwest Colorado and has a population of about 800.

Hinsdale County is home to Lake City – often referred to as the ‘most remote place in the lower 48.’ Despite having the lowest population density of all of Colorado’s counties at just 0.7 residents per square mile, Hinsdale County is home to four National Forests, four National Wilderness Areas, two Scenic Byways, and multiple iconic trails – including some options that take hikers up to 14,000 feet of elevation.

While Lake City has a population of less than 500, it’s an outdoor recreation town that goes year-round, hosting water sports on Lake San Cristobal in the summer and ice climbing in the winter. There are also plenty of trails to explore and cabins to rent in the area.

If you’re looking to dodge the crowds during your next round of mountain-bound activities, Hinsdale County and Jackson County are two great places to do it.
