Butcher shop meets sports bar at this highly-rated Colorado Springs spot with a sunset view
Another Monday has arrived, and once again, this writer has a restaurant review from ‘weekly date night’ to share.
For those who have missed this unofficial article series from OutThere Colorado thus far, each week my girlfriend and I plan a dedicated date night. The catch is that one week, I surprise her with a spot we haven’t been to before and then the next week, it’s her pick to surprise me. The person getting surprised has no clue where they’re headed until the ‘picker’ pulls into the parking lot.
It’s been a great way for us to try new places around the Pikes Peak region and also a great way of making sure there’s at least one night throughout the week where the focus is solely on ‘us.’ A few of the spots we’ve gone to in recent weeks include Por Favor, Bunzy’s & Booze, and Yellow Mountain Tea House – all of which we loved. This past Friday, we added another spot to the ever-growing list.
Last Friday, it was my girlfriend’s turn to pick a spot for date night, and she chose a spot that definitely lived up to its name and positive reviews found online – Red’s Sunset Grill.
Located on the northern edge of Colorado Springs, this spot can be described as ‘sports-bar-meets-butcher shop,’ with a big menu that had me wanting to come back to try something else before I even put my order in. Plus, it’s got wraparound mountain views from an angle often missed by local residents, and it is indeed perfect for a dinner sunset.
We started off with the soft pretzel appetizer. At this point, I could probably write a soft pretzel guide to Colorado Springs as this has long been a favorite dish of mine, and I’ve got to say, Red’s Sunset Grill served up a great one with house-made queso on the side.
When it came to ordering entrees, my girlfriend went with the 12-ounce New York Strip with sides of asparagus and baby potatoes. Meanwhile, I’ve always been the guy that will order a burger at a steakhouse, so I went with the lamb burger, topped with chimichurri, goat’s milk gouda, pickled red onion, and grilled portobello mushroom caps served on a brioche bun – dill-themed coleslaw and fries on the side.
The food arrived right after each of us finished the beer we ordered upon sitting down – perfect timing – and both of us loved our dishes so much that the conversation took an immediate pause to make way for us scarfing down our meals between breaths.
Undoubtedly, my burger was a great pick and one I’d recommend. The perfect blend of several flavors not typically found as options at most burger joints.

Meanwhile, my girlfriend’s steak was cooked right and she loved it. Her sides were also a hit.

Oh – and before I forget to mention it, Red’s Sunset Grill is also home to its own on-site butcher shop. We didn’t end up making any purchases, but the cuts of meat did look impressive. They’re got protein options from the land and the sea available.
Overall, we had a great time at Red’s Sunset Grill. Kudos to her for another great pick – I’m sure we’ll be back soon. From the inviting atmosphere to the food and drinks to the mountain views, Red’s Sunset Grill is a great addition to the Colorado Springs dining scene.
At time of publishing, this spot has a 4.3-star rating on Google Reviews. Plan a visit to Red’s Sunset Grill here.
