On September 23, Colorado Parks and Wildlife notified the public of a deer that might be in trouble in the area of Colorado Springs.

The deer has been spotted with some sort of red strap severely tangled in its antlers, now said to have a visible injury, as well. The deer was last seen in the Gleneagle area between Colorado Springs and Monument.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials have been monitoring the movements of the deer and have asked any member of the public to call 719-227-5200 if it is spotted.

“Antlered animals are highly resilient and naturally shed antlers annually,” wrote Colorado Parks and Wildlife about the situation. If this deer happens to shed its antlers in a timely manner, the issue of entanglement could potentially solve itself, though its injury may still be problematic.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife used this situation as a reminder to the public with Halloween and the winter holiday season ahead. String lights, Halloween webbing, and other decorations can be problematic for wildlife, either resulting in entanglement or an animal getting trapped. Sports nets bring similar concerns, too. Keep this in mind while decorating this fall and winter season – make sure decor is animal-safe. Ground lights or lights mounted out of reach of animals and along the edges of a house tend to be better options.
