What’s up with the donkeys roaming this small Colorado mountain town?
It’s almost time for Cripple Creek’s Fall Fest, and it features the special herd of donkeys that roam the Colorado town.
Cared for by the Two Mile High Club, the Cripple Creek Donkeys consist of 14 rescued donkeys that have been integrated into the original herd of donkeys released from working in the mines in 1901. The donkeys were freed to roam the town of Cripple Creek.
The Two Mile High Club was created in 1931 to care for the donkeys and the group has continued doing so for more than 90 years. In the winter, the donkeys live in a winter pasture, which provides them with shelter, water tanks, and room to roam. When the weather warms up, the donkeys are released into Cripple Creek. They are then free to roam the town from May 15 to October 15. Visitors of Cripple Creek are even allowed to feed the donkeys approved treats that can be purchased from the Two Mile High Club or at various locations throughout the town.
As well as caring for the donkeys, The Two Mile Club sponsors three big festivals over the summer, including the Fall Fest in Cripple Creek and the iconic Donkey Derby Days.
This year, the festival will take place from Oct. 4 to Oct. 5, and promises a “celebration of autumn splendor.” The festival is free, and will include plenty of activities, entertainment, and food and drink.
Some new attractions for 2025 include square dancing, pie-eating contests, a human donkey braying competition, and a pet costume parade.
“Fall Fest has always been about celebrating out community and the beauty of the season,” said Brandon Westoff, president of the Two Mile High Club. “This year, we’ve really focused on creating an even more immersive and fun experience for everyone. From the thrill of chainsaw caring demonstrations to the simple joy of a hayride, there’s something for every member of the family to enjoy. And of course, what’s Fall Fest in Cripple Creek without our beloved donkeys?”
