Non-profit uses “power of running” to instill confidence in young Colorado girls

Since its founding in 2005, non-profit Girls on the Run of the Rockies has worked to use running to impact the “way girls see themselves and their opportunities,” and an upcoming event is set to showcase that mission.

“Girls on the Run is so much more than a running program,” said executive director Lisa Johnson. “We are empowering girls to live life by their own rules by dampening the societal noise around them.”

The non-profit serves around 5,000 girls at more than 300 schools, community centers, and parks along the Front Range each year with future expansion likely. Participants ranging from 3rd through 8th grade embark on a 10-week curriculum that aims to address a drop in self-confidence and increased anxiety and depression that has been noticed among those in this demographic.

An upcoming ‘Girls on the Run’ 5K event is set to take place on November 1 at the America the Beautiful Park in Colorado Springs. The event is open to everyone, and registration takes place on the non-profit’s website. It’s also worth noting that the event is made even more accessible by using the discount code SoCoReader10 for $10 entry.
