Star climber dies at 23 in Yosemite National Park

Rising star Alaskan climber Balin Miller, 23, died on October 1 after taking a big fall while rappelling in Yosemite National Park.
A report from The Guardian indicates that Miller was near the top of an El Capitan route called ‘Sea of Dreams‘ when the accident occurred, with the incident witnessed by Yosemite photographer Tom Evans. Evans said Miller was attempting to free haul a bag stuck below his anchor at the time, descending off the end of his line as he tried to reach it.
Despite being only 23 years old, Miller had already made a name for himself in the alpine climbing community. Last June, he became the first person to solo the Slovak Direct route on 20,310-foot Denali, federally designated as Mount McKinley.
No official post has been made by Yosemite officials at time of publishing, likely due to the ongoing government shutdown.
Rappelling accidents are among some of the most common fatal climbing accidents, typically involving a climber falling off the end of a rope while lacking a safety or stopper knot and attempting to descend past the rope’s length.
Condolences go out to those impacted by Miller’s death.
