6 mountain towns to visit during ‘spooky season’ in Colorado
October is here and spooky season is underway; and while fall leaves might not stick around for much longer in many mountain towns around the state, Colorado adventure doesn’t have to be put on pause.
October into November is the perfect time to visit several of Colorado’s historic mountain towns before consistent snowfall starts. This list features a mix of spots known for spooky tales, history, and Wild West vibes.
Here’s a list of six Colorado towns to visit during October in Colorado:
Editor’s Note: Remember that October and November can bring snow to Colorado. Plan ahead by checking forecasts and be ready to bundle up.
- Estes Park: This Larimer County enclave is famously home to the Stanley Hotel (inspiration of Stephen King’s ‘The Shining’) and the eastern entrance into Rocky Mountain National Park. While fall colors and elk rut tend to attract big crowds to this town in September, those crowds start to drop off from mid-October into November, with smaller crowds continuing into the winter season thanks to the lack of a local ski area. Plan a guided tour at the Stanley and enjoy a vibe around town that feels more ‘local’ compared to that of peak tourism season.
- Cripple Creek: This historic mining town can feel a bit empty after fall colors start to fade and leaf-peepers move on, but that’s not a bad thing. Fall is a great time to check out mining ruins in the area, as well as Mt. Pisgah cemetery. Or – if you’re feeling lucky, check out a local casino for unmatched ‘Wild West’ vibes. Don’t forget to visit Rita the troll during your trip.
- Leadville: Another high-elevation mountain town with plenty of mining ruins to set the scene, embark on the Mineral Belt Trail for a glimpse at what high-country Colorado looked like during the early days of statehood. It’s also worth noting that historic buildings line the city streets in Leadville – another great look at the ‘Wild West.’ Stop in a saloon and visit the Leadville Heritage Museum.
- Salida: This Chaffee County town is located just south of Buena Vista, and it’s full of small town vibes. Find plenty of restaurants and shops to explore and head north to see Saint Elmo’s Ghost Town in Nathrop.
- Cañon City: Whether you’re checking out the Royal Gorge Bridge or the railroad that runs beneath it, stunning views await in this part of the state. Plus, Cañon City is home to the Museum of Colorado Prisons, sure to deliver a spooky – and educational – experience.
- Manitou Springs: A town that’s long been associated with the supernatural and witchcraft by some, Manitou Springs is a one-of-a-kind stop that makes for a great day trip or a weekend getaway. Not only is this spot close to Colorado Springs and all of the attractions that city has to offer (like the Garden of the Gods, the Olympic Museum, and The Broadmoor), local recreation is also easy to find (looking at you, Manitou Incline; or check out the lower section of Barr Trail if you’re trying to find something less intense). Miramont Castle is also a spot that should be on your list for a visit to Manitou Springs – it’s a sprawling manor with dozens of rooms and the history to match.
