A ghost of a spooktacular: Denver officials warn of fraudulent Halloween events

With Halloween just around the corner, city of Denver officials are warning people to be on the lookout for fraudulent events advertised online.

Officials have identified one event called “Halloween Wonderland” that has been selling tickets online but has not been approved by the city or verified to be legitimate by police, according to a news release from the City and County of Denver’s Department of License and Excise.

An advertisement for the event says that there will be rides, a circus, an ice rink, live music and haunted areas, according to the release. It also says that the location of the event will only be shared upon purchase of a ticket.

Given the fraudulent advertisement, city officials are warning people to be careful of buying tickets online, especially if they are asked to provide credit card or personal information, according to the release. Additionally, officials said that if an event asks you to pay before giving clear details — including date, time and organizer information — it may not be safe.

Anyone who sees advertisements or messages that seem fake or suspicious should report them at www.DenverGov.org/ConsumerProtection or via the Denver Police Department’s fraud and financial crimes division at 720-913-6752.

People can find a list of approved public events at the Denver Office of Special Events calendar.
