Hikers warned about mountain lion activity along popular trail near Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Hikers hitting the trail in Morrison, Colorado may have noticed a sign that’s recently popped up on a popular local trail.

The sign reads “ADVISORY: Mountain lion activity reported in this area. Be aware of your surroundings. Leash your pets. If you see a mountain lion: Stay calm. Stand your ground. Don’t run. Be big and loud. If attacked, fight back” and it’s located at the start of Mount Morrison Trail.

Mount Morrison trail is one of the most heavily-trafficked trails in the area, though the human presence presumably hasn’t kept the big cats away, thus hikers should stay alert and on the look-out for the apex predator lurking nearby. The trail is a 3.5-mile route round-trip, with about 2,014 feet of vertical gain, per AllTrails. It’s located right behind the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre, close enough that music can be heard on parts of the trail when an event is taking place.

The advice given on the sign is crucial to follow for safety – one key piece of advice is to keep pets on leash. On that note, small children should be kept nearby, too.

While mountain lions tend to avoid human interaction and attacks on humans are rare, pets and small children can be targeted. The risk that mountain lions pose on pets was put on display in another situation that took place this week, with a mountain lion believed to have snatched a small dog out of a backyard in the Town of Erie.

Colorado is filled with wildlife and living with that reality is part of residing in the Centennial State. Much of Colorado is natural habitat for the mountain lion species, thus being around this big cat is simply part of entering the natural space. If a mountain lion is spotted in a civilized area or appears to be overly interested in humans or is acting aggressive, report the encounter to the local Colorado Parks and Wildlife office.
