Small town Colorado resort ranks among Conde Nasté’s best ski areas in North America
Well-known travel publication Conde Nasté recently released the results of their ‘Readers’ Choice’ picks for best ski resorts around the world. In a ranking specific to North America, a more remote ski area that tends to get overlooked by out-of-state travelers got a major nod.
Southwest Colorado’s Purgatory Resort recently ranked 23rd in Conde Nasté Traveler’s 2025 Readers’ Choice Awards on their list of the best ski resorts in the U.S. and Canada. Located in the rugged San Juan mountains near Durango, the resort offers 1,600 acres of skiing terrain, as well as other winter activities like snowshoeing, Nordic skiing, snowmobiling, and ice-climbing.
“We’re grateful for this recognition and for the guests who choose Purgatory year after year,” said Dace Rathbun, Purgatory Resort’s general manager, in a press release, “Our goal is straightforward: give people the freedom to ski, including more time on snow, less time in lines, and make snow sports accessible for families.”
To crate the rankings, Conde Nast Traveler got survey responses from more than 757,000 readers across the U.S. rating their travel experiences.
According to the press release, Purgatory Resort is one of Colorado’s most family-friendly and affordable ski areas. Skiers and snowboarders can enjoy 107 trails, four terrain parks, and 11 lifts at the resort.
Apen Snowmass ended up snagging the highest ranking among Colorado resort on the list, coming in at third place. Beaver Creek took fourth place, Aspen 9, and Vail tenth.
Jackson Hole, Wyoming too first place as the best ski resort in the U.S. according to Conde Nast Traveler’s readers’ choice awards.
