World’s best ‘scenic train ride for fall’ located in Colorado, per report
The hunt for fall colors is by no means restricted to Colorado, or the United States for that matter. Fall colors are enjoyed by many around the globe.
On that note, a company called Japan Rail Pass recently released a report that was highlighted by Travel + Leisure, indicating that the best ‘scenic train ride for fall’ worldwide is located in Colorado, ahead of routes in Spain, Switzerland, Japan, and the state of Georgia.
In order to make their final determinations, Japan Rail Pass considered factors like TripAdvisor reviews, Instagram hashtags, and seasonal weather data, aiming to find fall train rides that offer the “clearest skies and most idyllic experiences.”
It’s no secret that Colorado is home to many world-renowned scenic trains – the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Train, the Pikes Peak Cog, the Royal Gorge Route Railroad, and the Georgetown Loop Railroad all get plenty of attention. That said, a train that tends to be underrated and often gets missed by travelers ended up snagging the top spot on the Japan Rail Pass list.
The company ended up dubbing the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad as the best ‘scenic train ride for fall’ on the planet, known for winding through Colorado and New Mexico in the area of the San Juan Mountains.
“Owned by the states of Colorado and New Mexico, the train crosses state borders 11 times, zigzagging along canyon walls, burrowing through two tunnels, and steaming over 137-foot Cascade Trestle,” reads the train’s website. “All trains steam along through deep forests of aspens and evergreens, across high plains filled with wildflowers, and through a rocky gorge of remarkable geologic formations. Deer, antelope, elk, fox, eagles and even bear are frequently spotted on this family friendly, off-the grid adventure.”
For the full experience on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, Coloradans will want to depart of the small town of Antonito, with this route taking off at 10 a.m. and ending up in Chama by 4:20 p.m. Riders then return to Antonito via bus, arriving back in town by 5:45 p.m. Adult tickets start at $135, with a variety of train car options available.
The only other American train that made Japan Rail Pass’ ‘top 5’ list was the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway in Georgia.
