Coyotes are killing dogs in the Denver metro area

With so much wildlife found in the state of Colorado, it’s crucial to keep a close eye on pets. A recent string of attacks on Denver metro area pets highlights exactly why that’s so important.

According to the Broomfield Police Department, three reports have recently been received related to dogs that have been killed due to coyote predation. The attacks have taken place in and around the Anthem neighborhood, which is located on the northeast side of town.

“Our hearts are with those who have lost their beloved pets,” reads a press release on the matter. “Broomfield is home to many wild animals, including coyotes, foxes, owls, hawks and eagles. These wild animals exist even in residential neighborhoods. While coexistence with wildlife is encouraged, so too is public safety. Unattended pets are seen by wild animals as prey.”

Coyotes are opportunistic hunters, known for preying on a wide range of species – basically, whatever animal is vulnerable and small enough for them to attack. According to the press release, even a fence won’t keep pets safe from coyotes, as the species is able to scale the typical six-foot fence “with ease.” Authorities also warned that standing in the doorway to watch a pet while it’s outside is not enough to deter a coyote from entering the yard. Pets owners were urged to be within five feet of their pets at all times.

The Broomfield Police Department press release also included the following tips for keeping pets safe:

  • Keep dogs on a short leash (6 ft. or less)
  • Avoid known or potential den sites and areas of thick vegetation
  • Do not allow dogs to “play” with coyotes or foxes
  • Do not leave pet food and water bowls outside
  • Always supervise your pet outside, including fenced backyards
  • Keep cats indoors

Sadly, this isn’t the only time that a wildlife attack on a pet has been covered in recent days. The Town of Erie Police Department also informed the public that a small dog was presumably snatched up by a mountain lion.

Why are government jobs growing faster than private jobs? | Vince Bzdek

By Vince Bzdek A couple of numbers keep bugging me. Over the past 12 months, the number of Colorado government jobs has grown by 12,000 while private jobs increased by 10,200 jobs, according to the Common Sense Institute. The government grew faster than the private sector. That’s pretty weird, given the private sector is about […]
