Most haunted road in Colorado – home to ‘Gates of Hell’ – is known for twisted past

There’s no way around it – some roads are simply spooky to travel, especially alone and on a cloudy night with a fall nip in the air.

Car rental company SIXT sought to track down the most haunted roads around the United States and turned to TikTok to do so, looking at the numbers related to posts making claims of ‘haunted’ routes.

Colorado’s Riverdale Road, which travels between Brighton and Thornton, ranked second on the SIXT ‘top 10’ list of haunted routes, with TikTok views related to the claim topping five million. Numerous ghost sightings have occurred on the route, with top reports of ‘phantom joggers’ and other various hauntings surfacing throughout the years. These sightings allegedly occur on the side of the road late at night, appearing real at first before fading away.

SIXT isn’t the first to bring attention to Riverdale Road’s ‘haunted’ nature, either. The route has been covered by various local media and even has a page dedicated to it on the Colorado Haunted Houses website.

According to Colorado Haunted Houses, this winding 11-mile stretch of road has long been blamed for spooky happenings, first stemming from claims of a nearby Native American burial grounds that would leave curses on trespassers. Then there’s also a story about a homeowner who burned his large home along the route to the burial grounds with his family inside after he became possessed by a demon. The large gates at the property were later dubbed the ‘Gates of Hell.’

Whether someone believes in the paranormal or not – this drive is admittedly a bit spooky at night, lined by cottonwood trees that are sometimes said to look as if bodies are hanging from their branches.

Drive it if you dare!
