“Hikers did exactly the right thing,” says search and rescue after successful mission
A recent search and rescue mission out of Colorado’s Douglas County highlights an important takeaway that all hikers should be aware of.
According to Douglas County Search and Rescue, their team was activated on Sunday night to find two lost hikers and their dogs in the Indian Creek trail network.
The response involved boots on the ground, ATVs, K9s, and a drone team.
The hikers and their dogs were ultimately found, with the response team able to transport them to safety via the ATVs.
After the successful mission, Douglas County Search and Rescue said the following:
“The hikers did exactly the right thing by stopping when they were lost, calling for help, and then staying in place.”
The last portion of that statement captures a move that is often crucial for expediting the search and rescue response. Staying put in an area (when safe to do so) makes it much easier for teams to find someone that’s missing.
It was also mentioned that hikers should be aware that nighttime temperatures can rapidly drop during this time of the year. This makes bringing extra layers crucial for warmth and survival.
