Three Colorado breweries won ‘brewery of the year’ awards at GABF, dozens got medals

Colorado breweries won big at this year’s Great American Beer Festival, with more than two dozen local breweries and cideries recognized as medal-winners, including several that took home ‘Brewery of the Year’ awards.

The three Colorado breweries that won ‘Brewery of the Year’ awards in their respective size categories included Cannonball Creek Brewing Co. in Golden (501 to 1,000 barrels), River North Brewery in Denver (1,001 to 2,000 barrels), and Westbound & Down out of Lafayette (5,001 to 15,000 barrels).

As far as awards for individual beers went, winners were as follows:

  • Westbound & Down Brewing Co. – Westbound Mill (Lafayette): Westbound IPA; American-Style Strong Pale Ale (Bronze)
  • Wild Blue Yonder Brewing Co. (Castle Rock): Moroccan Christmas; Wood- and Barrel-Aged Strong Beer (Bronze)

According to the Brewers Association, a total of 273 breweries and cideries won at least one of the 347 medals handed out at this year’s fest. A total of 8,315 entries were judged by an expert panel and with a total of 1,555 breweries and cideries competing in 2025, the average number of beers entered in each category was 71.

Two particularly notable Colorado wins were in the West Coast India Pale Ale category, which had the 2nd-most entrants among all categories at 300, and in the Dortmunder or German-Style Oktoberfest category, which had 186 entries (3rd-most among all categories). Westbound & Down Brewing’s ‘How the West Was One: Mosaic’ took gold in the former and Glenwood Canyon Brewing Co.’s Festbier took gold in the latter.
