Key mountain pass temporarily closed due to flooding with massive boulder seen on road
Southwestern Colorado’s Wolf Creek Pass was closed from Treasure Falls to South Fork for 12 hours on October 14 after heavy rain and flooding in the area prompted the need for emergency erosion control.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, the safety closure was put in place around 6 a.m. on Tuesday, cutting off a key route of travel in the region. Images from the scene show swollen waters of Wolf Creek filled with debris, and at one point, a boulder that appears to be the size of a small car was blocking a lane. It was not noted if that boulder fell naturally or if the boulder’s presence in the road was part of an erosion control effort.
Around 5 p.m, it was noted that erosion control and clean-up was still underway with no estimated time of reopening, though the closure was short-lived after that announcement. By 6:30 p.m., Wolf Creek Pass had reopened after the highway shoulder was stabilized and debris blocking traffic was cleared. Despite the change in status, drivers were still urged to proceed with caution in the area.
Due to heavy rain that southwest Colorado has gotten in recent days, it’s possible that some routes may still be impacted. Find the most up-to-date information on road closures and impacts on the Colorado Department of Transportation’s CoTrip travel map.
