New 100-foot bridge makes rock climbing safer and more accessible at Colorado state park

A recently opened pedestrian bridge will make rock climbing walls more accessible at one of the most popular places for rock climbing in the state of Colorado.

According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, a new bridge has been installed at Eldorado Canyon State Park, providing increased access to the climbing-only West Ridge and Redgarden Wall trails. Not only will this make the area more accessible for climbers, it will also allow for easier and more efficient search and rescue responses in the area. The bridge is also said to provide an “idyllic spot for visitors to enjoy views of South Boulder Creek.”

In total, the new bridge came with a price-tag of $345,000, funded with a $240,000 grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund and $105,000 from private and anonymous donors. Part of those funds will also go toward “extensive repairs” on Redgarden Wall trail, which are set to start in 2026.

In total, the bridge spans 100 feet, weighing 30,000 pounds.

Officials stressed that while the bridge and trail improvements will open access to rock climbing, the bridge does not lead to any hiking trails within the park. That said, non-climbers can still enjoy the view of the creek from the span.

“We are excited how this project will enhance visitor access and safety while preserving the park’s unique character,” said CPW Assistant Director for Outdoor Recreation and Lands Fletcher Jacobs. “Eldorado Canyon has long been recognized as a premier climbing destination, and this project will help continue that legacy.”

Eldorado Canyon State Park is located south of Boulder.
