Runners and bikers breaking ‘speed limit’ on popular Colorado trail could get $100 fine

A speed limit has been proposed for the Animas River Trail in Durango, and breaking it could result in a $100 fine if approved.
The Durango City Council is set to consider the proposal during a meeting that will be taking place on October 21.
The speed limit would be created via a city ordinance, which would set a maximum speed limit of 10 miles per hour for trail users when others are present on all hard-surface multi-use trails within city limits. This would include the Animas River Trail. The speed limit would be in place on all days and at all times, specifically mandating the 10 mile-per-hour speed limit when faster users (like those on bikes or skilled runners) encounter slower users (like those walking). The reason for the change would be from a point of public safety.
The proposal was made amid a growing concern about safety conflicts between pedestrians and those on bicycles and e-bikes. There is currently no formal speed limit.
In terms of the ‘when other people are around’ aspect, the speed limit would not apply to groups traveling together, but the group would need to slow down if others outside of the group are encountered. Additionally, those speeding around blind corners who don’t spot other users until its too late to slow down would still be subject to fines.
It’s also worth noting that it’s not just those on wheels that could get fined. Runners traveling faster than a six-minute-per-mile pace could also be penalized.
