The haunting of the Windsor Hotel(s) in Colorado
The name of two Colorado hotels dubbed ‘the Windsor Hotel’ isn’t the only thing these spots have in common. They’re both said to be allegedly haunted, too.
Built in 1871, the Windsor Hotel in Del Norte is one of Colorado’s oldest hotels, so it’s no wonder it’s allegedly haunted. According to The Drop 303, the hotel turned into Del Norte’s main social and commercial center when it was a mining and ranching town, still serving as a popular spot for the community to visit today.
The hotel is supposedly haunted by a woman named Maude. Maude had been traveling though the San Luis Valley with her lover, per Colorado Haunted Houses. They stopped at the Windsor Hotel for six days and during this time, her lover reportedly said he’d be right back but never returned. Maude apparently saw him get into a car with another woman from her room’s window and four days later, she walked across the street, bought a gun, and shot herself dead in the hotel.
Today, if you stay in the same hotel room that Maude stayed in, you might hear her moan from the pain of her broken heart and the gunshot wound – as the rumors go. It’s said she might even wake up in the middle of the night, groaning and peering over your bed.
As for the Windsor Hotel in Silver Plume, this was the site for a ghost hunting fundraiser for a high school’s sophomore class in 2024. During the experience some participants said they made contact with something paranormal.
According to Colorado Community Media, the Windsor Hotel in Silver Plume was built in 1884 but burned to the ground. It was rebuilt in 1902 at its current location. The Lampshire Family owned it, and reportedly experienced several “unexpected and unfortunate deaths” during the time they owned the hotel.
Denver paranormal group Dead October brought their ghost hunting equipment and experience to Silver Plume on Oct. 12 of 2024 to help with the fundraiser for Clear Creek High School’s sophomore class.
Among the spooky occurrences that happened during the fundraiser are participants seeing a “stick-like” figure in a bathroom. Tour participants also reported sightings, smells, and the cold brush of a hand across the face throughout the event.
So there you have it, two more historic hotels that are said to be ‘haunted’ in Colorado – hauntings or not, both are beautiful parts of the state and worth the stay.
