Armed carjacking at mountain town dog park reportedly kicked off juvenile’s multi-county crime spree in Colorado
A male juvenile was taken into custody after allegedly committing an armed carjacking at a dog park in a remote Colorado mountain town.
According to the Custer County Sheriff’s Office, the multi-county crime spree started on the morning of October 14 when the juvenile resident of Custer County allegedly used a firearm to steal a Mitsubishi SUV from a local resident at a dog park in the small 700-person town of Silver Cliff. This prompted a response from law enforcement, with Custer County Schools placed on ‘Lock-In’ status as a precaution.
The stolen vehicle was soon located in Fremont County’s Cañon City, which is roughly an hour drive away from where the alleged theft occurred.
When law enforcement encountered the vehicle, a vehicular pursuit ensued along Highway 50 near its intersection with Highway 67. The suspect vehicle was then spotted traveling northbound on Highway 115 toward Colorado Springs by a state trooper.
The suspect vehicle was later found to be abandoned in Colorado Springs. Preliminary reports indicate that one or two additional carjackings were committed by the juvenile suspect in Colorado Springs, with the suspect also believed to have discharged his firearm one or more times during the crime spree. Law enforcement also reports that the suspect allegedly pointed a firearm at Colorado Department of Transportation employees.
Colorado Springs police officers were able to track down the suspect and pursue him to the point of capture. The suspect was taken into custody, but is not being identified due to his juvenile status.
All suspects are to be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
