5 ‘one-star’ reviews from unhappy tourists who visited iconic Colorado spots
Last year, more than 95 million people visited Colorado – and while it’s safe to assume that most of those people enjoyed their time in the Centennial State, some did not.
Here’s a look at reviews left by unhappy tourists who paid a visit to one of the most iconic tourist destinations in Colorado in recent years:
As most Coloradans know, Colorado is a very dog-friendly state. That said, not everyone is a fan. Here’s what one tourist had to say about four-legged friends being present at the Maroon Bells:
“Too many dogs, they ruin nature. Signs say keep dogs on leash, but people don’t care and rangers don’t stop them. I wish there was some nature left without dogs in it.” – One star; TripAdvisor user Masoudgk
Undoubtedly one of the country’s most iconic music venues, Red Rocks Amphitheatre is beloved by many. That said, not everyone has a great time – granted, this one is pretty understandable:
“I scooted on the seats and got over 150 splinters on my arse. Yoga pants had 100’s of tiny splinters from 1/16 -1/8” long; OMG painful and it- took hours to remove them.” – One star; Kimberle D., Google Reviews
Part of Colorado’s tourism revolving around the state’s natural beauty can also mean that the experience tourists have is a bit less predictable. From snowstorms to beetle kill to wildfires, all of these things can impact the experience – sometimes on a day-by-day basis. Here’s what one unhappy visitor had to say about a recent visit to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park following the destructive South Rim fire of 2025:
“Fire burned the area and the road to the bottom was closed.” – One star; Douglas D., Google Reviews
Many Coloradans take pride in following the principles of ‘Leave No Trace.’ That said, sometimes we fall short. Popular trails, in particular, can be problematic at times. One tourist was quick to notice this issue at the popular Hanging Lake waterfall attraction:
“Trash, graffiti, crowded, rude people, and graphic language flying freely. Leave it to humans to ruin what was once a beautiful landmark.” – One star; eat143, TripAdvisor
Many people don’t quite know what to expect when it comes to visiting the Great Sand Dunes. It’s hot, can get buggy at times, and walking up sandy hills isn’t the same as the standard ‘walk in the park.’ Despite the Great Sand Dunes stunning nature, it is a place where nature can tend to bite back. It’d be a good guess to say this tourist won’t be back:
“Its Hot! Real hot and the sand is blistering! We read that you would want shoes, but I thought with both the creek and not wanting sand in my only pair of sneakers. I went with my sandals, and regretted it instantly! No joke, the sand is hot enough to BURN you like fire! Also the end of the walk from the parking lot, right before the Medano. There is a short steep part of the path. BEWARE! The heavy traffic from the creek makes it VERY dangerous! My Mom fell here, and thank God came away with only bruises. But someone could get very badly hurt here. Then there’s the mosquitoes. They were MURDER around the creek! We were there for only as long as it took to ford through it. and I counted over 20 bites on my legs mostly. Just CRAZYl! Now when you put together seeing my beloved mother take a slam, Hot sun and Blistering hot sand burning my feet, and being TORE UP by mosquitoes!. Sand Dunes for us was pretty weak.” – One star; Steve C. TripAdvisor.
