Texas couple rescued after getting stranded on snowy Colorado pass that trapped Jeep days earlier
Don’t underestimate wintery weather during fall in Colorado. A Texas couple learned that lesson the hard way in recent days, not long after travelers from Florida made the same mistake.
According to Hinsdale County Search and Rescue, their team responded to a call on Monday night involving a couple from Texas who had become stranded in deep snow on Engineer Pass with their two dogs. If this story sounds a bit familiar, it might be because a similar situation unfolded on the night of October 23, when a father-son duo visiting from Florida got their Jeep stuck on the same pass after attempting to drive through about two feet of snow.
In order to save the couple involved in the more recent October 27 case, rescuers departed from Lake City at about 7:40 p.m., driving to the top of Engineer Pass before opting to continue on foot toward the couple due to deep and unsafe snow drifts. The stranded couple and their dogs were safely located and guided back to the search and rescue vehicle, which was used to transport the couple back to town. Details regarding the fate of the couple’s Chevy Tahoe were not included in a press release on the matter – it may still be stuck on the pass pending better weather conditions or a tow, which could impact access for others attempting to drive the route.
Hinsdale County Search and Rescue urged extreme caution on high-country roads in the area, as deep snow drifts are already forming above 12,000 feet of elevation. Generally, backcountry roads and rugged mountain passes aren’t plowed during the winter, thus deep snow can pose a serious hazard of getting stuck. If drifts are encountered, drivers are advised to change plans and turn back.
It’s also worth noting that both of these rescues highlight the importance of packing your vehicle with the right gear to make survival more likely if stranding occurs.
