70-foot-fall leaves man with life-threatening injuries in Colorado state park
A serious accident took place at Colorado’s Eldorado Canyon State Park on Sunday afternoon, resulting in a 69-year-old male sustaining life-threatening injuries.
According to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, the fall took place while the man was rock climbing with a partner at about 2:19 p.m. The two were on the Chockstone route at the time, which is a three-pitch trad-climbing route rated as 5.10a that’s 165 feet tall.
After taking a fall of about 70 feet, the man was knocked unconscious and was without a pulse. He did regain a pulse, however, thanks to CPR efforts conducted by bystanders and rescue personnel.
Eldorado Canyon State Park employees, along with personnel from Rocky Mountain Rescue Group and Mountain View Fire Protection District responded to assist, providing additional medical care and loading the injured climber into a litter so that he could be evacuated out of the steep and loose terrain. The climber was then transported to a local hospital for additional treatment, with the entirety of the rescue taking about two hours.
Thanks goes out to the rescuers involved in this mission. Find information on how to support Colorado’s volunteer-powered search and rescue effort here.
