Man escapes with life after 50-foot-fall from remote ‘knife edge’ climb in Colorado
A solo hiker escaped a big fall with his life in Summit County in recent days.
According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, a call for help was received from a male solo hiker who fell about 50 feet on the knife edge section between 13,642-foot Father Dyer Peak and 13,185-foot Mount Helen. For those familiar with the area, this section of technical terrain is located about two miles north of Quandary Peak and just under a mile south of Peak 10. It’s described as ‘class three’ in terms of difficulty by most sources.
Despite the big fall, the man was able to walk, though he had pain in his wrists and a leg.
The sheriff’s office coordinated with Summit County Rescue Group to organize a response and reached the man about seven hours after his initial call. He was successfully extracted from the field and a friend took him to the hospital for medical treatment.
