Another one of the wolves brought to Colorado this year has died

Another one of the wolves that was translocated from British Columbia to Colorado in January 2025 has been found dead. Not many details were made available by Colorado Parks and Wildlife aside from that the recently announced mortality alert was received on October 30, involving a female gray wolf (dubbed ‘2506’). The death took place in southwest Colorado.

The determination of the wolf’s cause of death will be made during an investigation into the matter, which is set to include a necropsy.

Per a spokesperson from Colorado Parks and Wildlife, six of the wolves released in 2025 have died of the 15 that were translocated from British Columbia. Meanwhile, four of the 10 wolves brought from Oregon and released in December of 2023 have died – a total of 10 of the 25 wolves involved in the program thus far.

Per the Colorado Wolf Restoration and Management Plan, “a survival rate of less than 70 percent would initiate protocol review.” At this time, 60 percent of wolves reintroduced since December of 2023 remain alive. That said, per the CPW spokesperson, the agency “continues to evaluate our program to ensure it is successful and our reviews have shown no need to pause our reintroduction efforts or change or modify any of our capture, transport or release protocols since none of the mortalities have been a result of those protocols.”

“CPW knew from the early stages of planning wolf restoration that there would be some level of mortality amongst translocated gray wolves which is why the plan calls for 10-15 wolves to be translocated for 3-5 years as well as potential supplemental reintroductions to establish a self-sustaining population,” said the CPW spokesperson.
